Today I started out at 9 am, made it to Sacre Coeur and got to see the church, the crypt, and went up to the top to see the view of the city. I saw a "statue" man who did not think he was getting enough attention so was coughing at people as they walked past. I also saw a "iron" street sweeper as he was applying his coloring but did not get to see him after he was finished. Since I did not have a real plan or clue on how to get anywhere, I saw some shiny roofs from the top of the hill and just headed into Paris.

I ended up at the main Opera house which had a ridiculous amount of statues and decorative carvings. At the opera I saw a chicken-man (apparently French people like to dress up). After I just kept walking in random directions and apparently ended up on the opposite side of the street of the Louvre except I did not know this and this was the point I stopped and turned around..... by the time I got back it was roughly a 6 hour walk.
Nichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009653892328285840noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6087108714089048668.post-63075671256653098052012-06-12T14:29:00.001-07:002012-06-12T14:29:38.952-07:00

So my last night in Cyprus was nice. I spent most of the evening with Ramin and Muhammad trying one last turkish dish (special type of doner) and then beers one final time at Cafe Inn and one final movie (last minute idea because Ramin was about to cry). Also hung out with Remember (Zimbabwean) for awhile and Fijo (Nigerian) for a bit also. Then pulled an all nighter since there was no way I was going to wake up at 4 am to catch the bus. Got to drag my luggage all the way across campus because all the cabs were going the wrong way, then sat in the airport (after my bag got searched) for 3 hours. Ended up being told I owed 2,000 liras (~$1400) or 4,000 liras if I wanted to pay the debt the next time I came back (aka never go back) because I was 33 days over my 90 day visa. Dunno if the customs guy got rid of the fine because he was nice or something actually made it go away but I got away with it. Ended up meeting a (nother) British Cypriot on the other side of customs and talked to him until the flight came and had my final Cyprus beer for breakfast (not best idea before a plane ride I should mention). Flights were uneventful until Paris where I managed to follow the wrong sign for half a second out through customs instead of to baggage claim so had to deal with going reverse through customs (not so fun) to get bag.

Paris was a whole nother fun. Lady behind me on RER train got pickpocketed, first ~25 minutes on train all I saw out the windows was graffiti and run down buildings, and I thought I might die. Got to Gare du Nord (like a mini-mall but mostly empty (storewise, not people)), and managed to prevent another pickpocketer i think (swerving to walk towards cops made him disappear). Got to the line two gate to find out you buy the tickets somewhere completely else so lady I asked where to buy tickets just let me go through with her, only to find control (ticket cops) standing further up. Thankfully they were on the stair side and left the escalator side open so I got away with it. On this train a band randomly got on and started playing music which was a nice change as I was completely exhausted. Then got out of that train station just to be in the middle of about 6 roads and having no clue as to which was which, just knowing the name of the street I had to walk down. I asked about 5 people if they knew which was which (none did) before one person intelligently suggested I just ask the street vendors, and as he predicted, they knew. Got to hostel, checked in, took shower, and feeling human again. (also has smallest elevator I have ever seen).

And so ends the blog about studying abroad and so begins the blog of EuroTrip
Nichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009653892328285840noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6087108714089048668.post-58434868650695631252012-06-04T10:49:00.000-07:002012-06-04T10:49:07.916-07:00

Not to much to say as the semester is wrapping up (7 days left till I go to the airport). I have mostly been hanging out with Muhammad and Ramin (Iranian masters students). Thanks to them I have become not as horrible at backgammon. The other night I helped set up for their friends surprise birthday party, and then the next day made burgers (mushrooms, onions, and more =) ) and homemade fries.

Other than that the only thing going on is finals (of which I studied ~20 minutes for the first and second (aka I woke up day of final, opened notes, flipped through it, and walked out door to take final) and the 3rd I studied an hour) which I finished today. Now all I have left is packing and relaxing.

About a month or month and a half ago it became difficult not being very distracted when I walked anywhere. This was because the strays which are everywhere on campus and in Cyprus (somehow all very healthy and friendly) had their litters. So everywhere you walked you saw puppies and kittens of every color. A couple days ago apparently was the 2nd round of kittens and one mother apparently liked my dorm building so every time I walk back I hear meowing and see 4-5 kittens running around. On the note of dogs, I stopped to pet one of the them towards the beginning of the semester and since every time he sees me he runs up to me and just follows me wherever I may be going. The other night he found he halfway through campus and followed me all the way back to the dorm and then when I walked through the door just stared at me with sad eyes until I came back out to pet him again.
This past weekend Ash had two friends that he met while in Turkey visit. One was from Italy and the other Poland and both were studying abroad in Turkey for the year. Ash had planned on taking them to Girne and Karpas but due to the limited bus schedules, they decided they would rather try hitchhiking. Somehow on Saturday we were able to hitchhike to Girne and back.
It was amazing how simple and how nice the people were and how varied the types of people that we met were and how varied the cars that stopped were. Our drivers varied from workers driving trucks, a college girl with a compact car (somehow managed to get all 5 of us in the back seat still), and yet another driver in a BMW 7-series (~$100,000 car). Once in Girne, we visited the castle and a monastery up on the hillsides (hitchhiking again to this).

I had assumed this would be more difficult because the further you go towards Karpas, the less roads and villages there are. Somehow though, we still managed to get to the furthest building - the monastery (the last leg in a tire repair van). We then hitchhiked back from the monastery to the Golden Beach part, although we did not stay long because it was cloudy (just one small strip of clouds but looked as it stretched all the way back to Famagusta).

So as I was walking to class I saw frames being put up and that was how I found out that the university has a annual festival. The amount of people at the festival was astounding to me and was the most people I had yet to see in one place in Cyprus. The festival went for 5 days, had concerts, a couple rides, a bunch of stands selling random stuff, and a bunch of different food (also first ice cream truck I have seen here).
I managed to have the opportunity to travel to Karpas (the northern peninsula of Cyprus) with a class field trip.
Since the area is the furthest north point, it means we got to pass through most of the country. The best part about the northern part of the island not being very developed is that the majority of the island is still in its pristine form. The drive was beautiful and amazing. Just a couple of the photos and the rest will go on facebook.

This part of the island is still the purest part (least development, smallest villages, and northern tip is a national park) and is a protection area for the wild donkeys which almost went extinct. The furthest point before the national park is an old monastery which was right on the sea (also large gathering spot for the donkeys).
Just a brief one until I can do a more detailed account. This weekend I tagged along on an environmental classes field trip to Karpas (Northern tip of Cyprus), saw the old monastery (the furthest north structure, more detail later), and the Golden Beach (where we enjoyed lunch, swimming, and teaching most of them how to play volleyball for the first time).
Today (Wednesday) the annual Spring Festival started. I did not expect much from it but was amazed at the size and how much there is to it. Sadly I forgot to charge my camera so I only got one picture before my camera died (and is still dead so I cannot upload yet). Will hopefully get more photos on a later day of the activities. More details will come with the pictures.
So I had to wake up at 7 am today, the day I normally get to sleep in, for my 3rd trip to the bank. On Monday I made my second trip. Unfortunately for that trip I looked at the wrong half of the bus schedule and would have had to wait an extra hour for the bus if I had not run into my Iranian friend who offered to share a cab since he lived near the bank. When I got there, the manager told me I had to come back Friday (even when he then said my card was at the bank but did not know why I could not have it. Still a little confused about that).

So today I caught the bus, got dropped off across the street from the bank, and got my card back, quick and painless. I then waited for the bus to finish its loop and come back to where it dropped me off. Apparently it did not drop me off at the actual bus stop though because it stopped up the road where I could just see but had no chance of getting to it, and it then proceeded to drive right past me with the driver completely ignoring me. A little bit down the road (as I started walking back to school) I saw another student who the bus ignored so I walked back with him, and so goes the story of how I met Benny the Nigerian.

Today I also had to turn in my passport for the second time (they are still trying to get all of my information), and got my EMU ID card (6 weeks before I leave).
So this week has been a bit different. Thursday started off fine until the atm swallowed my debit card. This led to a 4 1/2 journey with Abu and Ash into Famagusta (not all just walking, we also ate lunch, stopped at Abu's apartment (twice), looked at the birds in a pet shop, and got ice cream) to the bank to be told the atms in Famagusta are handled by the branch in a different city and that I would have to come back next week to get it. This led to me missing my economics class (and a quiz). That night had dinner at a different cafe that I accidentally stumbled upon.

Friday I was invited by the Egyptian President (my roommate Ash) and the Nigerian President to the African Students Award Ceremony. This was an interesting event and I met several new people including two Zimbabweans who spoke perfect English and one of which had given the opening inspirational speech which was quite impressive. Later that night I also saw my professor for my economics class who asked why I had missed class and then informed me that it most likely would not matter and that he would probably be throwing out the quiz due to a large number of students caught cheating.

Saturday I was invited by Firdavs to join in on a picnic. So I got to wake up at 7 am (quite sure a first or maybe second on this island) to meet up with him and take a bus out into the countryside to a place called Konuk. It was an area with a bunch of picnic tables and little chimney like structures at each for cooking and I spent the day relaxing and chatting with Firdavs and his friends. At one point I managed to almost get the majority of the Turks to cry by acting like I did not know what the football jersey (for their favorite Turkish team) and calling it pajamas. Sadly, I forgot my camera.
Nichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009653892328285840noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6087108714089048668.post-88639504756178894722012-04-25T04:00:00.000-07:002012-04-25T04:00:46.870-07:00

So midterms went well. I was the second highest in my Physics class with 22/25 and the average was 11 (our class had the highest average). Economics my teacher told me I could have done better - I got a 100. Psychology was a 32/35.

The school has had a football tournament going on for a couple weeks now where each country could have a team. Today was the semi-finals: Nigeria vs Azerbaijan and Cyprus vs Iran. Nigeria and Iran came out victors (I had hoped for Cyprus after their last couple matches I watched) but Nigeria is my favorite seeing as my friend is the goal keeper.

And I am starting to know to many people on this campus. What was a 15 minute walk when I arrived has become a 30-45 minute walk due to stopping and talking. My friends on Facebook are slowly growing as people manage to find me or force me to add them (sorry if random Arabic posts pop up).

I also recently broke down and bought this chocolate like spread that people like putting on their bread here. I must say, that even as odd as it seemed at first, its delicious.
Monday was a holiday (not sure why, not really complaining) so naturally I decided to not sleep and walked to the beach at 5 am instead to watch the sun rise. Sadly clouds blocked the bottom but only for a bit and then I got to watch the rest. I then ventured out into the water a bit (surprisingly warm unlike American beaches) only to find that after it got waste deep it started rising again. Oh ya, and the pool at the beach club has been filled so hopefully will be putting that to use also soon.
Nichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009653892328285840noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6087108714089048668.post-27140286176662027852012-04-09T13:45:00.005-07:002012-04-09T13:45:44.233-07:00

My "two-week spring break" is going well, I am done with two midterms and only have psychology left which should not be very difficult. As requested (by Uncle John) I have included several pictures of the closest part of the city as well as a few more food. Ash and I walked to the restaurant that I order doners from because he claimed they were much better eaten fresh, and they were.
This week has been interesting in several new ways:

1) My economics professor informed he expected a 100 from me on our quiz

2) I "played" squash with Ash (harder than it looks...)

3) Watched some of the football matches at the school tournament (bigger deal for a school tournament than I expected)

4) Watched a mini-war between Palestine and Azerbaijan

Oh yeah, and am slowly becoming addicted to doners.....kinda quickly
Nichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009653892328285840noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6087108714089048668.post-9969582670000559822012-03-26T06:50:00.001-07:002012-03-26T06:50:41.838-07:00

So I did not do anything exciting this weekend but did get the opportunity to figure a couple more things out.

1) Apparently my computer was not being stupid when it kept changing the time on the clock (starting Saturday). I was convinced it was doing this because of daylights savings in the states but was under the impression such a thing did not exist outside of the USA. Well, came to find out this morning it does exist and thankfully my roommate found out that it does, otherwise I would have been an hour late to everything for awhile.

2) Food Wise: I am getting slightly annoyed with the million different shops and the fact that each one has one item that is cheaper than anywhere else and one thing it has extra flavors or brands of. On the positive note though, I found a new flavor of noodles (shrimp) and fresher bread that even tastes better as well as a "dessert" bread. There are at least 3 types that I have seen so far and each is filled with something different (same idea as a donut with jelly), one with chocolate, one called cream brulee, and I am not sure about the third. They are delicious and cheap which is a bad combination.

3) School Wise: Sadly I have confirmed that spring break does not exist when you are going to school on an island. Instead, they put school first and to ensure everyone is prepared for their mid-terms, does well, and is not overwhelmed with having all of their tests on one day, EMU sets aside two weeks for mid-terms. During this period we do not have lecture, you only have to worry about your mid-terms. Seeing as I only have 3 mid-terms, I will essentially have two weeks of "studying", aka going to the beach everyday.

4) Shadowing: Shadowing is still going good and every time I see a completely new variety of cases. For example, today included a severe case of never ending hiccups (there actually is a medicinal cure) and a student taking a course discussing a variety of diseases that he was then convinced he had (hypochondriac).
Nichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009653892328285840noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6087108714089048668.post-50318684355689000372012-03-21T13:23:00.000-07:002012-03-21T13:23:43.152-07:00

So the month of my meal plan ran out Sunday and since I was not actually saving money using it I started trying other food. I (with a lot of help from my roommate Ash) have now actually gotten food a lot closer to Turkish food (although I am told it will still change if tried in Turkey) including but not limited to:

Adana Doner: Kind of like a wrap/burrito idea. I know of 4 kinds so far and tried 3, those being the chicken, mixed, and BBQ (different idea of BBQ here that is difficult to explain) and the one kind I have not tried being meat. It has a mixture of peppers, tomatoes, and a bunch of other unidentifiable tastes in it and the picture of it on the side is it after being half eaten. Very good and cheap.

Mushroom Sauce Chicken: This item is very creatively named as it is a chicken breast filled with mushrooms (and sauce) and cheese after being fried. Served with fries, rice, and salad (they do not use leaves of lettuce but like strings....it is odd), it is difficult to actually finish the entire thing.

Spicy Cheeseburger: Courtesy of Burger City (American fast food is not present due to Northern Cyprus not being recognized and the claim of the land being stolen from the Greeks), I expected a little burger without much flavor and a non-spicy spicy sauce. The burger (although a little pricey) was worth every lira, the meat was delicious and the sauce left my mouth burning. I also saw chicken sandwiches, steak, fajitas and other options on the menu so will definitely be revisiting Burger City.

Noodles: I was talking to my friend Hassan one day as he was making his lunch and accidentally discovered Roka Instant Noodles, aka Ramen Noodles. It is in every way the exact same idea: ridiculously cheap, impossible for even a guy with no cooking skills to screw up, and tastes great. This has now become my lunch saving me a 15 minute walk (each way) to Table d'Hote (cafeteria) and 5 lunches is now cheaper than 1 lunch there.
I got to see some more interesting cases such as one person who has lupus and another individual who had an irregular sound in his heart beat. So far it is all going great and should prove to be an interesting semester following this doctor (and maybe a day or two in the other departments).
Thursday I had dinner at Firdavs again and his roommates made a delicious dish called maklube. The center was rice with meat and potatoes and then the outside switched back and forth from salad (very different from American salad) and yogurt. And, like any Turkish meal, bread and orange fanta on the side. It was a very enjoyable night as his roommate had also invited his 3 friends from preparatory school (pre-university for people who cannot speak English since courses are taught in English) and they tested their ability to ask questions and understand the answers.

Today started out boring but I am now writing this blog from a new room with a new roommate...without mentioning to my old roommate I was moving...oops.Nichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009653892328285840noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6087108714089048668.post-31256213698656881122012-03-12T13:13:00.000-07:002012-03-12T13:13:00.484-07:00Today was my first shadowing day. I got there at 1 (an hour "late" since my class goes until 12:30) but the doctor is extremely nice. Found out he spent time in London, completed his medical school in Turkey, and is a Cypriot (not Turkish). Saw a wide range of cases as anybody who cannot speak Turkish just asks for Internal Medicine (even though there are other specialists "better" for their problems). Was also cool because he actually let me practice the basic stuff and then compared what he got to mine. One patient who came in even offered his friend who was with him for extra practice =)

After ~15 minutes of attempting to explain what shadow means (apparently this term does not exist whatsoever in Turkish) they told me to wait until 12 (hour) to see the doctor of internal medicine (closest I could get to cardio). After waiting for him and once again struggling to convey what I wanted, he happily said he would love an assistant if the director would let him and even suggested rounds of all of the departments at the health center (more of a mini hospital than nurse). Only problem was director was out for another hour so had to wait again....and attempt to explain...again. Finally at the end I got an "ok" and then had to have them explain what "ok" meant....but I can come and go whenever I please and shadow whomever I want.Nichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009653892328285840noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6087108714089048668.post-65548201258926006842012-02-29T12:49:00.000-08:002012-02-29T12:49:09.763-08:00Finally got out of my room tonight after two straight nights of nothing (1 because I forgot my phone was on silent). I went and played "billiards" (they refuse to call it pool) with Dalha (Pakistani) and ended up losing 5 games to 4. I then went to a different cafe in the middle of town with Abu and Firdavs to try baklava (the cafe has the reputation of having the best). Not sure 100% what it is made of except the inside is a nut mixture (pistachios they claimed) and oil. Tasted pretty good.

Hopefully it warms up soon so I can go to the beach (university has a private beach club)Nichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009653892328285840noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6087108714089048668.post-24299115390247748642012-02-22T00:48:00.000-08:002012-02-22T00:48:36.318-08:00So Monday night I was introduced to one of the "hangout" spots by Ash (Egyptian that sounds American) at one of the cafes and there met his friends from a slew of countries (Lebanon area). Tuesday night I went to Firdavs new apartment and enjoyed dinner with his new Turkish roommates (Muhsin, Yunis, and Murat) and Yunis plans on inviting me back so he can cook one of his favorite Turkish dishes. On the note of classes, it is only the 3rd day of classes and I have already come to dread going, although this may be caused by my 8:30 am classes 4 days a week.Nichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009653892328285840noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6087108714089048668.post-8019638356353560282012-02-19T14:43:00.000-08:002012-02-19T14:43:37.171-08:00Friday I got to sample Abu's cooking this time (I believe Yansin cooked the first time) and Abu has also decided that he will attempt to pass on some of his cooking ability to me with his remaining time at EMU. He prepared a spaghetti (absolutely amazing) of a sort (with many spices and less than normal sauce), chicken legs, and chicken pieces (not sure what they were called, just bite size pieces of flavored chicken). He had planned the meal for 5 people but several friends of theirs showed up unexpectedly and we ended up sitting 9 people around a small table (their dining table) and the food worked out perfectly somehow. This weekend I also figured out where to take my laundry (where I get to just drop it off and come back 3 hours later and have it already folded, was awesome) and then went bowling with Aytilla and Jazgulu. The main person (I assume owner) working the bowling alley went to take a ball from the lane we were on and I asked him to leave it because I was using it (by accident found a finger tip ball) and came to find out it was actually his ball. As he then saw I could actually bowl a little, he wrote random messages on our screen and even offered me a free drink if I could get different things. On the walk back to my dorm from bowling, there were two people talking in the middle of the path and as I was passing I heard one of them speak and had to turn around and ask him if he was American because of his accent. Ends up he is Egyptian (tricked first by Iraqi and now Egyptian) but spent some time going to school in America. Regardless, I talked to them for awhile and by the time I had left, I had gotten another person who could speak perfect English to offer me his assistance if I needed anything (as well as some tips on teachers).Nichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009653892328285840noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6087108714089048668.post-45328984279729673262012-02-17T05:38:00.000-08:002012-02-17T05:38:21.202-08:00So after physics class (which only one other student from Bursa, Turkey showed up to), which the teacher did not even come to, I finally got my meal plan which starts tomorrow now. Then broke down and bought a burger at one of the little food shops that are all over campus (little wooden building that sells food and drink really cheap). She made the burger right there and then loaded it with all kinds of things (fried onions, lettuce, etc) all for only 4 Tl. Was then going to go shopping with Firdavs but he had to talk to his teacher and I just so happened to run into Abu, his Nigerian roommate, who offered to show me some stores. During our walk through town (at a very leisurely pace to enjoy the conversation) we once again had countless deep conversations ranging from his desire to impact the world (I have yet to meet another my age who matches his intellect, depth, and sincerity). The first shop we stopped had jeans for 150 Tl which was ridiculous. The next play had them for 80 Tl so I got a pair and ended up only paying 45 Tl after discounts. Then a couple shops later I found a shirt (short sleeves are not in stores yet as they still think it is winter) for another 24 Tl. After that we began walking back when I noticed a piece of colored paper coming towards me (ridiculously windy today, Abu says that means summer is near). I tried to step on it because the money here is colored and managed to push it down a drain so I saw another two pieces and managed to grab one (a 20) while Abu grabbed another from the street (a 5). We then proceeded to (with the help of 4 of his friends that just so happened to be passing by) use a piece of leftover plywood (bent in half to make pincers) to grab the other piece from the drain (there drains are shallow). All in all I spent 69 Tl and then made 45 Tl walking back. On the way to the dorm we stopped to have a cup of tea (half a lira for students) which I am actually beginning to enjoy.Nichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009653892328285840noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6087108714089048668.post-64583473754887745142012-02-17T00:51:00.000-08:002012-02-17T00:51:04.179-08:00So I got 3 of the 4 classes I thought I was going to have (sucks but I will get over it) and my backup classes were only offered in Turkish. Missed my first class because the idiot assistant told me I could not get my username and password for the blackboard (wrong) and without it I could not see my class times. Met the teacher though and she is American so understanding here should not be to hard.
On another note, the cleaning ladies have a key to our room apparently and come in as they need to (dunno what they clean yet). I know this because she opened the door to let the repairman in (at 10 am) and he is currently fixing random stuff in our room that was loose or broke (lock on one of the cabinets). Best part = roommate is still sleeping, or at least was before the power tools started.Nichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009653892328285840noreply@blogger.com7
